Jimmy Swaggart, once a famous American televangelist and gospel singer, has died at age 90 after two weeks in a Louisiana hospital, his family announced. He passed away following a cardiac arrest on June 15, with his son Donnie saying he had been in critical condition.
A message on his official Facebook page said, “Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ.” Born in 1935 in Ferriday, Louisiana, Swaggart began preaching as a teenager. He and his wife Frances lived in poverty, often staying in church basements and motels. His ministry grew after he started radio broadcasts in 1969 and launched a TV show in 1971, reaching millions.
In the 1980s, Swaggart was a well-known figure in American Christianity, founding the Family Worship Center and a Bible college. He was also a successful gospel singer, selling over 15 million albums and touring worldwide.
However, his career was damaged by scandals: in 1988, he was caught with a prostitute and gave a tearful televised confession. After losing his church credentials, his support declined. In 1991, he was again caught soliciting a sex worker but refused to apologize publicly.

Despite setbacks, Swaggart continued his ministry, launching the SonLife Broadcasting Network in 2007 and maintaining a loyal following. He is survived by his wife Frances, his son Donnie, and many followers worldwide.
