Chilling 911 call before 10-year-old found dying on highway

Ten-year-old Rebekah Baptiste tragically died after suffering prolonged and severe abuse at the hands of her father and his girlfriend. Just days before her death, she was found severely injured, unresponsive, and showing signs of long-term mistreatment on a remote highway in northern Arizona.

Over several months, Rebekah made multiple desperate attempts to escape her abusive environment, including fleeing a harsh off-grid living situation without electricity or running water. Investigators uncovered horrifying evidence of torture, including a brain hemorrhage, burn marks, deep cuts, missing toenails, bruises, and widespread trauma across her body.

Though initially denying involvement, her father and his girlfriend were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and multiple counts of child abuse. Her younger brothers, who also suffered abuse, have been placed in state custody.

Despite numerous reports and pleas for help from family members and her school, child protective services failed to intervene effectively. A chilling 911 call from the day she was found reveals how gravely ill Rebekah was—barely breathing and in urgent need of medical care.

Rebekah’s heartbreaking story highlights critical failures within the child welfare system and serves as a powerful call for justice and reforms to better protect vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. It is a sobering reminder of the urgent need for vigilance and action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
